We are the stewards here. Wildlife management today requires an open mind when it comes to the managing the complexities of human dominated environments with development, recreation, and the preservation of wildlife. We’ve learned a great deal in our recent history as hunters and land managers, in that we are responsible for the recovery, management and preservation of our wildlife populations. The ratio of connected habitat to humans means competition for most hunters and huntable species. However, wild pigs present something entirely different -- they are abundant, available, and our ecosystems depend on us balancing their populations. We are the stewards here. Pigs are a means by which we can preserve the legacy of hunting, bestowing meaning to the hunter and fortifying the active role we have as the tenders of the flora and fauna in our landscapes. They are perhaps a species that connects us more to our historical role as humans than we’ve ever considered.⠀
